Combining Van Gogh's and Picasso's Technique

Introduction/Description

My goal is to learn about different painting techniques that painters used in the past and I want to develop my paintings skills. I have decided to learn about Van Gogh and Picasso because I have been in their museums and I know what kind of techniques they used. Therefore, what I want to do for personal project is that I want to make a product that combines both Picasso's and Van Gogh's technique.

Investigating

I divided the investigating part in two; searching about Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso, making a summary of those painters. 15th of June I searched about Vincent Van Gogh from the website of  Van Gogh Museum . On 25th of June I have done my research of Pablo Picasso. On 6th of July I wrote my summary of Picasso and Van Gogh because on the first investigating part i didn't write with my own words thus on the summary part I wanted to write with my own sentences.

Criteria

In order to know what to do, I have created my own criteria questions:
-Investigate about painters life, search it up how the paintings are related to their life.
-Make a summary about the investigation so it can be more understandable.
-How can I relate this painting to my life? What is the purpose? How can I make it valuable, what determines the value of the painting? What are the techniques that have been used? How was it related to painter and painter's life? How can Van Gogh and Picasso's techniques combine in one art project?

Motivation/Personal Interest

I was always interested in art. When I was younger I participated in some painting contests. I won some of the contests but the ones that I couldn't won made me more ambitious thus i needed to improve my painting skills further. So I thought personal project is a good opportunity to develop and learn about  art and famous painters more. About 2 years ago I visited a lot of museums which contained Van Gogh's and Picasso's painting, I had a lot of opportunities to see their paintings.

Combining Van Gogh's and Picasso's Technique Taking Action

I started drawing with Picasso style. I found a video that shows how to draw like Picasso. It was quite interesting because in the video the woman said that there was no one right way to draw only thing that you needed to use was your imagination. After that, she said that if we drew a portrait we could even draw outside of the face. So I first started to draw my portrait on a pasteboard. When you look at the portrait you will see that it looks like one of the Picasso's portrait but you will see differences. Since i drew my main object I want to practice Van Gogh's technique because I know that is not easy to combine a lot of different colors at the same time. However, I will search it up and practice the technique before I apply on my product. Van Gogh's technique was really difficult than I thought. Before I did my final product I wanted to practice his technique on piece of paper. My first draft was drawing The Starry Night. In order to learn the technique I opened a video from YouTube and did what is said in the video. After a while I gave up doing it because it didn't look good and I realized that the direction of the color was really important which I didn't care while I was painting. Therefore, I did a second draft which was a total success because I applied the technique that I learned from the YouTube video correctly.
I started to my final product on 23rd of July. I divided my process into 3 days. In my first day I was thinking about what to draw and then I looked at Picasso's paintings, I realized that it would be a good idea to draw a portrait so I could use shapes on the face and I could use Van Gogh's technique for the background Later on I started to draw. I first drew the face and started to split it and make the shapes clear. After I was done with my drawing I imagined in my mind the final art to see how would look at the end.

On the second day, I moved on painting process. This process took two days because on Van Gogh's technique you have to thing every single detail and you need shades of colors. I had a lot of colors but I had to use white a lot because I needed shades of colors . I painted the background in blue and then I painted like Van Gogh because in Van Gogh's painting technique there is sometimes space which is hard to fill in with the painting because it can destroy your painting technique. Therefore usually people paint sky in blue so I thought I would paint in yellow and yellow's shades so it look as if it is morning.   Also the directions of the colors are the directions of the light which affects the painting a lot because if I had colored randomly it would have made my product complicated and wouldn't highlighted the portrait. That's why I painted the background lighter and the portrait darker.

On the third day, I finished the neck part and below. This part was easier then others but it also took a while and I added some details at the end.  In addition, I have learned a lot of things from this art product because I saw that using Van Gogh's technique a lot on the portrait made it seem complicated and incomprehensible. Besides, I have learned that the colors that I used was really important and made the art clear so in my next art product I will pay attention what I learned.

I decided to do two second final products because my plan was to do only one final product which was going to be the best one but since my first final product looks a bit creepy I wanted to improve my drawing skills and make a better one. Sometimes the beginning part can be the hardest part because at the beginning I didn't know what to draw so I had a book which was made for kids and it tells about painters life, modern art, explanation of paintings, first drawings, sculptures etc. The book is called Children's Book of Art. In order to have an idea I looked at some paintings and I also wanted to have an meaning or a message of my art.  Therefore when I looked at the further pages which the title was Pop art, I saw Marilyn Monroe and it's pop art painting which was: Marilyn Monroe Pop Art. After this happened I looked up paintings and pictures about Marilyn Monroe because I knew that I couldn't draw her on my imagination but I also wanted to add my creativity and differences to the painting. I searched the picture on the internet and there was a video that shows how to draw her. The good thing about drawing from this website was the man was drawing with a pencil drawing technique and I was going to use acrylic so that's where I could use my creativity.

My Process:

While the man was showing how to draw I exactly did the same sketches. As you know in pencil drawing technique shading is very important and that makes it look better. However, since I was going to use acrylic I knew that I couldn't shade them so I thought maybe I could use a darker shade than the original color. Let me explain it with more detail: When I was done with my drawing I marked the places which was going to be darker color than other parts. I painted the face with normal flesh color which was made by me (I mixed red, yellow and a bit white). Then I needed shades of color to make a shade thus I split the flesh color in three parts. I needed a darker and a lighter one so in order to make a lighter color I added white and in order to make a darker color I added red. Then I painted the face with colors that I made. Painting with a lot of shades of color makes the painting more realistic. In the face part Picasso's technique is not clear the reason is that because as I learned from my previous experience sometimes adding geometric shapes on the face make it complicated and worst. Therefore I knew that I had to use his technique and I painted shadows in geometric shapes but I didn't make it clear because I didn't want to destroy it.

I used the same technique in hair part that I used on the face. Since Marilyn Monroe's hair is yellow, I wanted to paint in yellow's shed. I also added Picasso's technique and I made it clear this time. I think that geometric shape gave another look and made the hair's shape clear. In the right sight her hair is wavy and the circles inside of the hair made it look as if the hair is wavy.

On the background I used Van Gogh's technique and I also wanted to use Picasso's so I divided the background into geometric shapes but it is not clear unless you come closer to take a look. In the original photo the background is white but I wanted to use blue and blue's shed to make it a fresh look.
